Proposal for Etude 4 – “Echo and Narcissus”

People are always interested in themselves. There is nothing better than to use their facial image and their own voice as an interactive dialog between them and this project. One interesting phenomena I have been observing for a long time is that most people who pass by a mirror will usually glance their reflection in the mirror. They usually stop and look at their reflection with a smile or other expression. The mirror is a traditional medium that humans like to interact with it everyday. According to psychology, the behavior that humans are always interested in themselves is associated with Greek mythology — the story of Echo and Narcissus.

Narcissus grew to become a stately and handsome youth. An oracle foretold at his birth that he would be happy and live to a good old age if he never saw himself. His heart was cold, and in it was neither hate nor love. He lived indifferent to youth or maid, to friend or foe.

Echo was a Nymph who was attracted by Narcissus’ appearance but couldn’t speak her love to him. Echo had a noisy tongue and always told lies and encouraged the other Nymphs in many misdoings, so that she was punished by Juno, the wife of Jupiter, and no longer had a voice of her own except in imitation of other people’s words.

One day as Narcissus was wandering alone in the pathless forest, Echo was peeping from behind a tree and following his footsteps. She tried to call to him with endearing words, but she couldn’t. Narcissus came to a calm and mirror-like spring, and saw himself in its reflection. He didn’t know it was his own image but he thought it was a youth living in the spring. His cold heart grew warm and he fell in love with this beautiful reflection. He spoke to it. Echo tried to get Narcissus’ attention but she only could repeat his last few words from Narcissus speaking to his reflection. To avoid the youth in the water from leaving him, Narcissus never ate nor disturbed the calm spring by drinking from it until he died.

I am going to use technology to reconstruct the Greek mythology. When the audience stops by this project, the LCD on this project will gradually appear his or her facial image. The LCD symbolizes the calm and mirror-like spring in the story of Narcissus. When the audience speaks to his or her reflection on the LCD, he or she will hear the echo. Now, I am seeking a new way to make the “reflection” and “echo” more interesting.

Lin-Yu Wen Artist Statement

Since last semester, I have explored the interactivity dialog between humans and machines and learned how to use technology to serve my need. Tonight, I am going to show my three projects. The first project is Etude 1 “The Three Persons Orchestra.” The second project is Etude 2 “The Future DJ Pro Gear.” The third project is Etude 3 “Echo.”

The similarities of the three projects are associated with sounds and the performer’s body gestures. The first two projects are designed for non-physically-touched – a non-physically-touched instrument and a non-physically-touched mix board. The third project is my experiment to explore sound texture.

My concept for Etude 1 “The Three Persons Orchestra” is about my imagination for future musicians. When they play their instruments, their body gestures are a part of their musical performance. Nowadays, I still see people limited themselves to thinking about traditional ways to interact with an instrument. They are afraid of not physically touch an instrument and think that will not have full control on it. Besides, one of my dreams is to be a violist. I know to play an instrument requires a prior traditional musical training, but I don’t have it. This instrument can let everybody to have a much more comfortable experience feeling like a musician. The piece was inspired by the Theremin. A Theremin performer controls the volume and alters the pitch by his hands movement. My project has the same principle, so I consider this project is a kind of variation on the Theremin. Their difference is that the Theremin can only play continuous monotones of radio wave sounds, but my project can play different instrument sounds. The Theremin only allows for one person to interact with, but my project allows for more than one person to participate up to 128 different instruments and participants.

My concept for the Etude 2 “The Future DJ Pro Gear” is to let everybody experience mixing like a conductor-like DJ. In fact, his or her body gestures will be a part of the musical performance. This piece was inspired by Tom Cruise’s movie “The Minority Report”. He used his hand gestures to navigate around screens without physically touching the console. I chose these types of gestures for the ways to interact with my project. Waving your hands in the air before the sensors will trigger the sound effects such as tempo change, music echo, and other preset special sounds. The sound effects you make will also be recorded and mixed with the current playing music. When the music finishes playing, you can playback to listen to your music. The preset music in this piece is “Ten Sides Ambush” which is a traditional Chinese music. The music chosen was inspired by a music piece “Bye Bye Butterfly,” composed by Pauline Oliveros. The musician mix classical opera with electronic radio wave sound signal, and mix it with full of multiple layers and have rich sound textures.

My concept for the Etude 3 “Echo” is to explore sound texture, and use it as a vehicle to gather some industrial sounds and mix in my electronic music piece. I interact with this project by using different material to interact to the microphone. When the sounds regenerate from a pair of audio speakers and then go through my microphone, they regenerate second sounds with rich and multiple sound textures. This project was also inspired by the music piece “Bye Bye Butterfly”.

The Future DJ Pro Gear

Watching the movie “The Minority Report,” you can see Tom Cruise using his gestures to move around screens or wipe them out in the air without physically touching the console. Hence, the concept of my piece “The Future DJ Pro Gear” was inspired by this movie. In the past, I have seen a traditional DJ makes sound effects by physically touching a mix board to adjust the potentiometers, switches, and slide potentiometers. Does it seem too complicated? In my piece, I am going to change the situation so that everybody can experience a conductor-like DJ role by waving their hands in the air before the infrared sensors to trigger the sound effects. In fact, you can record, rewind, and playback the music you make. Now I am going to talk about the form of “The Future DJ Pro Gear,” the function of the infrared distance measuring sensors, the ways of interacting with this piece, and the operation system, software and hardware required.

First, “The Future DJ Pro Gear” is formed with two vertical metal sticks and there is an orange wooden box in between. The surface of the wooden box has four red buttons whose functions are play, record, rewind, and playback. A horizontal metal stick is hung on the top with eight infrared distance measuring sensors. The base of this piece is formed with four metal sticks.

Secondly, the horizontal stick has eight infrared distance measuring sensors hung on the top. Each sensor has different sound effect, such as to distort, delay, decay, squeeze, volume, frequency, gain, and echo.

Next is the question: How to interact with “The Future DJ Pro Gear?” Before you play this piece, you may need to adjust its height to fit your need by raising or lowering the horizontal metal stick and then use the two little screws, which hang on the left vertical stick, to insert the holes of the both vertical metal sticks. Next, you press the “play” and “record” buttons at the same time, the original set music “Amadeus,” about 2 min. 20 sec. long, will be played and recorded in the computer. While it is playing and recording the music, you can trigger the different sound effects by raising you hands before the infrared sensors. The sound effects you make will also be recorded and mixed with the current playing music at the same time. When the music finishes playing, it also ends the recording. Now you can release the “record” button and then press the “rewind” button. The music you made will be rewind. Then you can press the playback button to listen to your music.

Lastly, the operation system requires a Windows XP or Mac OX system. The piece needs Max/MSP 4.3.2 software to play. Luckily, there is a trial version that you can download at http://www.cycling74.com/products/dlmaxmsp.html. In addition, the piece needs a pair of audio speakers.

The Three-People Orchestra

One of my dreams is to learn the violin, but I have no time to accomplish it. While I was learning how to use the Max/MSP and its powerful programming feature, I thought to myself “Why don’t I just create an interactive musical instrument?” Suddenly, the first thought came out in response is that I can create a physical computing instrument to let everybody to be a musician without having prior traditional musical training. Now I am going to talk about the form of “The Three-People Orchestra,” the function of the infrared distance sensors, the ways of how to interact with it, and the operation system, software and hardware required.

First, about the form of “The Three-People Orchestra,” I don’t think the musical instrument in the future digital age will be formed by a traditional musical instrument. It will be formed in different ways, such as from a piece of paper or a tiny little box. That’s the reason why I formed “The Three-People Orchestra” a rectangular wooden box, having four infrared distance measuring sensors on the opposite sides to play three instruments. The three instruments I have originally set are the violin, piano, and orchestra hit. The piece can let three people play together at the same time. That’s why the piece is entitled “The Three-People Orchestra”.

Second, I am going to explain the function of the infrared distance measuring sensors. The first infrared sensor can control the violin pitches. The second infrared sensor on the first infrared sensor opposite side can control the violin volume. The third infrared sensor can control the piano pitches, whose volume is already set to be unchangeable. The fourth infrared sensor can control the orchestra hit pitches.

Third, about the ways of interacting with “The Three-People Orchestra,” I don’t think the human beings in the future digital age need to physically touch the instrument and learn how to play the music. In this piece, “The Three-People Orchestra,” you just need to put your hand before the infrared distance measuring sensors. Then the infrared sensors will measure the distance of your hands’ movement and trigger the instrument’s pitches.

Lastly, the operation system requires a Windows XP or Mac OX system. The piece needs Max/MSP 4.3.2 software to play. Luckily, there is a trial version that you can download at http://www.cycling74.com/products/dlmaxmsp.html. In addition, the piece needs audio speakers.

Pig Cloning

The story took place on the planet Mochiri in 1975. A young and intelligent king pig led a group of advanced pigs who moved there in order to avoid an attack by human beings. They built the Nice Pigs Republic.

In the beautiful spring season, those pigs enjoyed their lives by eating, playing and breeding. They were never bothered by anyone.

Unfortunately, the queen pig died in an attack by human beings in 1997. The king pig grieved her death. As a result, he not only refused to deal with his country, but he also pretended to be sick in bed. His governors began to worry about him. The autumn was approaching and the king pig was so pale and sallow that he didn’t look like a pig. As a result, those governors conducted a secret meeting, named A Good Pig Meeting. They all cried out sighing! “Our king continues to suffer so much, what can we do for him? Is there anything that can cheer our king up? If only the queen hadn’t died. But, she’s dead already. Couldn’t we bring her back to life!” They discussed long and hard to try to find some sort of method of bringing the queen back to life.

“Wow! I have an idea!” one of the governors yelled. All the governors looked toward the origin of the voice with their shinning eyes and saw that it was Governor Smarter who was speaking. “According to legend, there is a sorcerer living in the Flower-Fruit Mountain. He is proficient in medical skills, especially with Cloning-Pig research,” he said.

“Wow! That’s so wonderful!” the pigs yelled with great passion. Upon hearing this good news, the pigs placed a pig elder in charge of leading an expedition team to visit the sorcerer on Flower-Fruit Mountain.

In March of the coming year, the expedition team, led by the pig elder, arrived on Flower-Fruit Mountain.

“No problem!” the sorcerer replied with full confidence, “However, if you want to clone a complete queen pig, you need to collect three things: crocodile eyelashes, goldfish tears, and turtle nails.

“They howled! “Those three ingredients sound impossible! Where can we find them?” the pig elder asked with great curiosity.

“In the Far West, there is a pig warrior living in Dinosaur Basin. You can borrow those three ingredients from him. But do please remember, when you see him, you all must give three howls of laughter. If you make him comfortable, he will be easy to work with.

“After traveling over land and water, the expedition team, suffering inconceivable hardships, arrived in Dinosaur Basin.

When the pigs saw the pig warrior, they did not dare to forget the pig sorcerer’s words. They howled out: “Ha! Ha! Ha!” Finally, after the long journey, they got the three ingredients easily and brought them back to Flower-Fruit Mountain in one night and one day.

Back at Flower-Fruit Mountain, the pig sorcerer murmured incantations while he added the three ingredients to a shallow container. Soon a white fog began to emerge from the shallow container; the queen pig’s figure was gradually forming. With the pigs’ exclamations of joy, the queen pig rose out of the shallow container.

The expedition team brought the queen pig back to the Nice Pigs Republic with boundless joy.

“Ah! Is it really you, dear?” the king pig asked. He suddenly became lively, and he quickly got off his bed and ran to the cloned queen pig.

“Well, who are you?” the cloned queen pig spoke with astonished expression to the king pig.

The king pig and the pig governors explained to the queen pig again and again, nonetheless, she still didn’t understand. The king pig suddenly realized what had happened and spoke to everyone, “We can clone a complete body, but we can’t clone a unique heart.” The king pig stopped immersing himself in the pain of losing his wife. In fact, he comprehended the situation: To command and enjoy his real life was more valuable.

Henceforth the king pig concentrated on governing his country and The Nice Pig Republic thrived once more.
